The line, marking by marking
The first three numbers are measured in three different ways — in millimetres, as a percentage and in inches. The cross-section shows where each one comes from.
- 195 — width in millimetres — measured across the tread, not the full width including the lettering
- 65 — profile as a percentage — the sidewall is 65% of the width: 195 × 0.65 ≈ 127 mm, not 65 mm
- 15 — rim diameter in inches — measured on the rim, so the same tyre will not fit a different one

Up is allowed, down is not
The load and speed indexes must be at least those the car maker entered in the registration certificate. A tyre with a higher index always fits; one with a lower index does not.

The number says how many kilograms one wheel carries at the maximum permitted pressure.

Speed index table
The letter gives the highest speed the tyre is rated for while carrying the load that matches its load index.
